2014 Best Dividend Stock Picks Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 42 ratings

When you read a title such as “Best 2014 Dividend Stocks” you probably think that I’m pulling out the top 20 American and the top 10 Canadian dividend stocks that will outperform the overall stock market. The goal is obviously to beat the indexes but I’m also focusing on the global results of these stocks.
I wanted to write a book about stocks that, combined together, could generate an interesting result as a whole. I have always found as an investor, pulling the trigger and buying a single stock was easy. Building a strong portfolio where stocks could balance themselves out during different markets (bullish or bearish, stable or volatile) is quite a challenge. This is the reason why I didn’t only focus on the number or on a specific aspect (growth potential, high dividend yield, etc). I tried to put a combination of companies that could weather most economic situations.
This means that you will find stocks that should outperform the stock market if we are bullish and some others will outperform if we enter a bear market too. Some companies will show awesome sales growth and you can expect both dividends and stock values to rise. Others have mature business models with strong dividend growth habits, but don’t get too excited with the potential of stock appreciation.

Amazon Prime is a legitimately good, maybe great, service. If the author has chosen to allow Amazon Prime subscribers to get a free copy of his new book, which he has also alerted everyone on his extensive email list about, I can't get too upset about it being a "gimmick". This is the third year that I have read Mike McNeil's ("the dividend guy") Best Dividend Stock Picks. It is a useful reference when I'm looking to add a position to my portfolio of dividend stocks.

Is Mike McNeil the same person as Mike Heroux? "Dividend Growth: Freedom Through Passive Income US Edition" was written by the latter, but Mr. McNeil lists it as his other book. Anyway...

The booklet is short and simple. It uses a stock screener strategy with set criteria (dividend yield, payout ratio, ROE, etc.), then picks 20 US and 10 Canadian companies with dividend potential. Mr. McNeil/Heroux emphasizes, repeatedly, these are not recommendations, but more like picks and ideas. Do your own research, using them as starting points. This is slightly unsatisfactory. If I am a beginner, what kind of research should I do (additional book to read, additional information to look for)? What are the risks, advantages and disadvantages of these particular search criteria? What is the relationship in between these numbers? What can be done differently?

I understand that this is a short volume, not written to educate about the vast knowledge of dividend stock strategy. But, I would have included a page or two to explain, why these particular values were chosen, what could be tweaked, what is the general risk of this particular setup. What additional fundamentals should be explored before choosing say, Aflac over Apple.

The booklet is easy to read, clean, concise and with just few of these additional pages could be a 5 star.

A good read and an even better source for investing information. A good place to start your DIY portfolio education.

Nice collection of information and analysis of dividend stocks.
Provides a 2014 overview and stock benchmark requirements
as well as financial figures and a brief narrative for selected stocks.
The information is a useful introduction for dividend investing
    on your own.
Or, the author offers a monthly subscription for his own detailed
    guidance on how to invest.
This book is not intended to be a complete guide or analysis and
does not compare dividend stock investments to other investments.

So much work done means I can start right away with picking stocks with good dividends. Also the book taught me how to analyse other stocks on the market. I now know what to look for, which is ideal for me since I invest mainly in the European market. I'm now selling my current US stocks in favour of great dividend stocks in the US.

Author offers good basic ideas and interesting ideas for possible dividend stock picks. Many of his listings in the book and on his web site are worth looking into. This is an idea generator, not a recommendation, list. If you're searching for ideas for sound dividend paying stocks, you'll find them here. However, you must do your own research and determine if your criteria for stock selection match the author's. I have found several outstanding dividend stocks among those listed from time to time. Better than many investment newsletters. Check out his web site as well.

The stocks listed in Mike's book provides a good starting point for further analysis. Eliminates a lot of the grunt work required to initially filter the available stocks to arrive at a working list.

This book, really no more than an article, give a very safe list of low yield companies. Few reasons were offered on the stock selection. These reasons are offered in the author's 'other' book which you can buy. I felt this 'book' was simply an ad, which I had to pay for, for his more expensive web site subscription. Save your money.
