Expanded: Stock Research Websites to Make Better Investment Decisions

Dividend Stock Research12One of the most popular posts on this blog is an article on the Top 25 Websites for Stock Research. That post is absolutely still valid, however I do change the sites I use and have provided some updates here in this post. In addition, I have provided a bit more information on these sites to help you guide your decisions.

If you purchase individual dividend stocks, then you know that the most difficult thing is gathering all the data you need to conduct your research. In the past 10 years, the web has made this job much easier. It used to be that investors had to rely on quarterly and annual reports to get the data. Today, there are a multitude of websites available that have compiled all of this information for us in one place so that we can complete our analysis.[ad#tdg-embedded]

I have spent a lot of time looking at a number of these sites. In this post, I have compiled a list of these sites that I believe are better than most. The sites I listed here are the ones that provide the quantitative data an investor needs to make decisions. Some of them have an “opinion” component to the, but I was focused on the data aspect. As such, these sites can help you get the data to make your decisions.

Of course, there are a number of other ones out there. If you disagree with any of these, or simply want to add your favorite site for research, then please use the comments section to do so.

MSN Stock Research

MSN Stocks Research provides in-depth information on stocks, including quotes, charts, news, company reports, SEC Filings, analyst ratings, financial results, insider trading and more. Use the Research Wizard to research any stock.

Yahoo! Stock Research Center

Research Center – Learn about companies through earnings announcements, analyst research reports, and company reports. Use research tools like screeners, financial calendars, historical and real-time quotes. Educate yourself about mutual funds, bonds, options.

Morningstar

Get real-time stock quote for Companies including charts, current prices, historical prices, news, financial statements, balance sheets, and income statements. Has a premium service which gets you more data and their opinions. Opinions are just opinions though, no matter who gives them.

GlobeInvestor

A Canadian site with a pretty comprehensive slew of data for Canadian companies. However, those of us who are Canadian long for the free data our neighbours to the south can get on their public companies.

Motley Fool Caps

Motley Fool CAPS operates from this premise: working together, investors can improve their investing results. Get other people’s view on a stock (for what that is worth) as well as a lot of well organized data on public companies. Just be wary of the constant pushing of their newsletters (which is getting a bit out of hand IMHO!)

Value Line

Not free, but you can get free reports on the Dow 30 components. The Value Line Investment Survey is a comprehensive source of information and advice on approximately 1,700 stocks in 98 industries, the stock market, and the economy. If I were going to pay for this data, this would be the one I would pay for!

Wikivest

I have only just started using Wikivest, but find it to be very useful. Like Motley Fool CAPS, the content is provided by regular investors who are sick of the mainstream financial coverage that seems biased. Investing is not just about the ratios, and on Wikivest you can get opinions from other investors on a specific company. I find that it balances out the analytical work I do on a company nicely.

As I said, there are a lot of other research sites out there. These sites help get the data you need to do your research. I never use jut one, and often verify and gather data from all of them. This way I can be relatively confident that the data I use is accurate. As they say, crap data in, crap data out.
