As with every asset, the return is very sensitive to the price you buy in at. And with a average term around 9 yrs the Cdn bond index won't churn significantly through time as interest rates change (i guess that's both good and bad). MultiFolDreams: when we're talking about investing to back retirement liabilities in the distant future equities are better at mitigating the inflation risk than nominal bonds. however, as the liabilities are far out (since you're young) longer term bonds are better (or at least more direct) at hedging the interest rate sensitivity of your future retirement cashflows.
